From the picture, we can see a female mathematics teacher is giving the students a lesson on Multiplication Table. One of the students raises a question: “No offense, but by the time we’re in the job market, won’t that stuff be outdated?” And the teacher looks surprised and embarrassed after hearing this. What the picture points out is the phenomenon that some students are challenging the necessity of the importance of learning basic skills, which is in fact a widely held view among many of us, especially young people.
Many reasons contribute to this phenomenon. For one thing, it is the fact that we are living in a world of fierce competition that urges us to arm ourselves with up-to-date professional skills so as to adjust to the changes of the society and the increasingly demanding employment standards. For another, most people hold the view that basic skills many not be applied to the practical use immediately so that they always ignore the importance of learning basic skills.
In my opinion/ As far as I am concerned, learning basic skills is of profound importance for our life and work, no matter how simple or even useless they look like in somebody’s eyes. Basic skills are the basis for creativity and innovation abilities. If you are not equipped with such basic skills as reading sand calculating skills, you can do nothing with greater opportunities. So we should enhance the leaning of basic skills so that we will be better prepared for the further innovation.

I know a man Who has a coin collection worth several thousand yuan. A short time ago he bought a rare ten-yuan piece worth 250 yuan. He was very happy about the purchase and thought the price was reasonable, on the other hand, my son collects match boxes. He has almost 600 of them but I doubt if they are wortfi any money. However, to my son they are extremely valuable. Nothing makes him happier than to find a new match-box for his collection.
That's what a hobby means, i guess. It is something we like to do in our spare time simply for the fun of. it. The value in money is not important, but the pleasure it gives us is.
